Timber Harvesting magazine Associate Editor Jay Donnell travels to Chipley, Florida to visit Chipola Timber Harvesting. Positive market developments have enabled Chipola Timber Harvesting (CTH) of Chipley, Fla. to expand from four company crews to six in the past year, with the most recent addition coming earlier this year. Located in the Florida panhandle, the organization’s goal is to harvest 375 loads per week. Recent upgrades at Rex Lumber Co. sawmills at Graceville and Bristol. Fla., and Spanish Trail Lumber Co. at Cypress, Fla., longtime markets for CTH, meant more lumber production coming out of the mills and the need for more logs coming in. CTH was up to the task. “We had such a backlog of timber to harvest that we decided to fire up this sixth crew. We feel like that’s the environment we’re going to be in for quite a while,” says co-owner David Morris.
